Comments Off on 10 Dos and Don’ts of Bottle Share Etiquette

For those of you that either host bottle shares, attend them, or are intimidated by them.

Now, my commentary:

  1. Enjoy yourself. No beer deserves to be heralded as the best and thereby entitle you to some feeling of superiority over all the other attendees. We all started somewhere and not everyone has access to the same tiers of beer as others. Be grateful for the thought behind the beers brought.
  2. Don’t discount a beer before you try it. I have been to numerous bottle shares where we all had preconceived notions of what the star of the show would be, then something wholly random surprised us all and stole our hearts.
  3. Have fun. Proper glassware is great to have, but not every host has a dozen snifters for participants to use. I agree with the article that you can feel free to bring your own glassware.
  4. Ensure you have something to snack on that does not destroy palates. This is an unfortunate occurrence, you have several high gravity beers or sours and either there is nothing to help soak up that alcohol, or there is and it taints your palate for the remainder of the share.
  5. Perhaps most importantly. Know when enough is enough. There is no sense in saving an absolutely killer five year Russian Imperial Stout to the end of a big share when everyone is so intoxicated that no one can pick up the nuances of the flavors. No one wins if this is the game that gets played.
  6. Have fun (yes, this is in here twice). Bottle shares are awesome social drinking events and allow you to collectively enjoy a broad range of beers that you as an individual may not have access to. Be sure to designate a driver or make arrangements to crash on a couch. Often times the beers will keep flowing, and hidden bottles come out of cellars and closets and before you know it, you’ve had thirty different beers, albeit only ounces of each.

Now watch this. I don’t care if you have already seen it. It is well done and will drive the point home
