Comments Off on America Now Has Over 3,000 Craft Breweries—and That’s Not Necessarily Great for Beer Drinkers

Yes, the craft beer market is becoming inundated with new breweries and beers. But is this change good? Well, there are a couple of schools of thought on it.
1. Yes, options are always great for consumers and you can find the perfect beer for what you want.
2. No, the influx of new breweries is going to choke out some breweries that have been making better beer and we will be stuck with options that stem from breweries propped up with distributor money.
Now, I believe that the actual answer lies somewhere in between. I feel as though we are going to lose some good beer over the next few years as the market continues to expand and eventually chokes out those smaller brewers who refuse to sell their soul to a distributor (can you see my bias?). But I also would like to believe that the breweries who manage their finances, don’t over-expand, and have a solid product will survive the “upcoming bloodbath” as Sam Calagione calls it.
Now, what are your thoughts on this? Do you think that the best beer will survive? or only the beers propped up with funding? Or? What is your take on this? Do you even think that we are nearing a craft beer bubble? (we are, but I think we have another 5-7 years before it really tapers).
