Comments Off on 20 years of craft beer bars in Ireland

A pretty good little read on some craft establishments in Ireland. They draw some interesting parallels to some questions that I see relatively often here stateside.

If anyone has suggestions on which bars and breweries that I should visit whilst I am across the pond, I would like to hear them.

Prosit!

“A good craft beer pub comes down to having a great selection of quality beers, he reckons. And no TVs, he adds.”

20 years of craft beer bars in Ireland

Regarded as ‘complete eccentrics’ at the time, the Porterhouse brew pub opened its doors 20 years ago. With host of craft bars now opening up around the country, we look at what makes a good craft pub

Comments Off on Frühschoppen: The German Tradition Of Drinking Before Noon

http://vinepair.com/…/drinking-beer-before-noon-is-ingrai…/…

The approach and attitude to beer is wholly different in Europe. There exists respect for what alcohol can do when consumed in excess. But dang, a second breakfast sounds like something that we should implement here as well.

Frühschoppen: The German Tradition Of Drinking Before Noon | VinePair

Germans don’t just enjoy drinking beer before noon, they also have a specific beer for this time of day called hefeweizen.

A new local brewery opening up this summer. I had been wondering how they were already working on a collaboration with Mraz in California, but with the brewer coming to San Antonio from California, it all makes more sense. I am excited to see what these folks are able to do. http://m.sacurrent.com/…/new-brewpub-weathered-souls-joins-…

Comments Off on Why we should nurture our craft breweries

Karlos hits the nail on the head with this article. http://www.theadvertiser.com/…/why-we-should-nurt…/84668028/

If you don’t appreciate the breweries that you have in your backyard, you may lose them. Yes, some breweries need more work than others. Some are just getting their feet under them. You never know when your local guys will hit a winner out of the park.

Comments Off on very real dangers of continuing to buy and support InBev and their brands

Further showcasing the very real dangers of continuing to buy and support InBev and their brands.

http://www.seattleweekly.com/…/losing-to-craft-beer-anheuse…

If you have ever drank in bars outside of the United States you have experienced this, and likely didn’t realize it. In Europe especially the brewery / distributor will own the bars / pubs and you will only find their products on tap.

I always make it a point to look at which distributor runs the tap wall in an establishment. It’s annoying to only see one or two houses distributing to an establishment. But it can be due to a number of reasons. In some cases, the bar is too lazy to deal with multiple houses and there is no foul play.

Other times, it is maliciously dictated by one house what beers can and will be on draft at a bar.

THIS is how you’re supposed to make a brewery promotional video. Talk about your purpose, your foundation, your mantra, show the tap room, show the vibe.

Unfortunately, video does not include the sense of smell here in 2016. Bayou Teche is an amazing place with amazing people. I thoroughly enjoyed my venture out there and guarantee that you will too.

Possibly the most hospitable brewery that I have ever been too. Their food even comes with a warning “Don’t ask what this is, just eat it”.

Comments Off on who brews your beer

While this was written last week, I feel that it is powerful to read at the beginning of this week. As we head into American Craft Beer Week, it is important to remember that it DOES matter who brews your beer.

Like Van Roy states, there is some great beer produced by the macro giants. But at the same time, this is an industry where we, the consumers truly have a good bit of power. Every dollar that we spend on macro is a dollar of power that we give to Brito.

I won’t ever tell someone what to, or what not to drink. But I do encourage every one of you to consider where you want your drinking dollars to go.

Prosit!

Brasserie Cantillon

Quintessence 2016 is over.
We had a great time thanks to all of you, Cantillon friends.
I won’t forget our volunteers who worked hard at every tasting spot, in the kitchen, shop, etc…

I have waited the end of the event to speak in more detail about the change in the organisation and why I decided to do it.

I got a lot of congratulations about the decision to cancel the inclusion of Del Borgo.
Some, even if they agreed, didn’t understand why I wouldn’t present beers brewed before Inbev took the Italian brewery over.
To be honest, my first intention was to cancel the Del Borgo presence and invite Leonardo Di Vicenzo as independent brewer with the beer he brewed before the Inbev repurchase.
I have a lot of respect for Leo and in my opinion, he deserved to be present.

But this idea was more due to our friendship and was not the best one to react to the last events. In such a case, a firm decision is the best, all or nothing.

It was nothing, and here are my personal reasons why.

It was first ideological but also due to our history, the history of the Cantillon brewery.
In the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s, the big industry bought over a lot of small craft breweries.
At this time, because of contracts enforced with bars by the industrial breweries, the most important way of beer sales for craft breweries was closed.
Competition was no longer equal and a lot of small producers had a lot of trouble, and had no other choice to shut their doors or to join the industrial side.
In 20 years time, we lost a lot of beautiful breweries, a lot of great beers and a lot of history!

We are very fortunate to live today through a new craft beer revolution, but I have the feeling that the big industry will adapt, at a global level, with the same politics they used in Belgium forty years ago.
In Belgium, decades ago, the reaction against this monopoly arrived too late, the power was already in the other camp.
That’s why, in my opinion, we need to react as fast as possible and that’s also why I couldn’t accepted an Inbev member in the Cantillon brewery.
Today the big industry looks to craft brewers on how to build the best image possible, then says “look, we are like you”.
They are not, and if they need to emulate us, I’m sure we are doing well enough without them.

Understand me, this personal point of view has nothing to do with the beer quality.
Some “industrial” beer is well made and craft doesn’t always mean quality.
Small industry is mainly working with small producers from the region.
When you drink a craft beer, you give work to more than one craft producer!
Unfortunately, I’m sure it’s not the same when you are drinking a beer produced by big industry.

If we allow big industry to take over what we’ve built, history will repeat itself…and I hope we won’t live again the events of Belgium forty years ago.

Stone’s latest announcement. The most concerning thing to me is this mystical group that has the deep pockets. 100 million does not just appear in your breweries front office overnight. While the article touches on the source of funds, it does not detail their origination.

Comments Off on How Eugene Kashper is transforming the 172-Year Old Pabst Brewing Company into an “Underdog Startup”

Here is a good little read to kick off your weekend. What are your thoughts on Pabst getting more involved in the market? Their Not Your Fathers blitzkrieg was a more impressive rollout than any InBev rollout in the last five years. In less than a year it skyrocketed into the mainstream of nearly every grocery store / liquor store in the U.S.

I’ve been curious about the Old Tankard launch, in addition to the relaunch of Ranier beer. By taking cult regional pseudo-macro lagers Pabst is recreating identity for these brands that have been forgotten for the last 15-20 years. They will be fun to watch over the next five years.

Comments Off on Atwater Brewery Plans $15 Million Texas Brewery

What are your opinions on Atwaters latest announcement that they are coming to Texas?

February 2014 Article: http://www.brewbound.com/…/atwater-brewery-plans-15-million…

March 2016 Article: http://www.craftbeeraustin.com/preserving-brewing-heritage…/

Atwater has been trying to get a facility in Texas for years now. For whatever reason, they keep falling through. Will this be the one that finally comes to fruition? I believe they were the first out of state brewery attempting to garner a Texas location. However, since their search began we have seen Backcountry from Colorado and Oskar Blues both will have facilities before the new Atwater venture opens.

What is your take on breweries expanding to Texas? Will you consider them “locally brewed” even amidst their headquarters being elsewhere? AB InBev has ~ 12 breweries throughout the United States, yet we do not consider them to be “local”.

Comments Off on Big Beer’s Plan to Sell to Consumers Who Hate Them

A short afternoon read about some of the tactics that big beer is taking to sell to the craft consumer. It truly is a different demographic to sell. Story, heritage, and a personal connection are huge. I watch it first hand, every day as corporate suits (well, polo and khaki clad sales reps) infiltrate the bars and open their checkbooks. Then you have scruffy looking bearded and tatted folks who have falling apart portfolio books slide onto a barstool and speak about their authentic crafted brews. The pitch isn’t polished, English majors cringe when overhearing the verbiage used. However, they speak from the heart. They are as authentic as their beer.

Some food for thought, look around the bar the next time you’re getting a pint. See who is trying to “sell” a portfolio, and see who is offering their product.

AB Inbevs next attempt at infiltration of the craft market. http://fortune.com/20…/…/21/anheuser-busch-estrella-jalisco/

While you have to acknowledge their tenacity, I have to wonder if this will flop like their William K Busch launch, Black Crown, and the countless other ancillary beers that they try to get into the market.

I am also interested in digging deeper on their agreement with Constellation Brands. I knew they had to sell a portion of Grupo Modelo a few years back, but if they are working with Constellation, that could be interesting.
