Comments Off on QUIT LYING TO CONSUMERS

If you are going to brew craft beer, sell craft beer, and try to raise awareness and educate the citizens of this nation on craft beer… then do me and the rest of the actual enthusiasts a favor… QUIT LYING TO CONSUMERS.

If you brew a Baltic Porter, CALL IT A BALTIC PORTER not a “Double Brown Stout”

If you brew a Honey Pilsner, DON’T ENTER IT IN THE BLONDE ALE CATEGORY OF COMPETITIONS.

There are some major distinctions between ales and lagers and by blurring those lines you are doing more harm than good. I cannot believe I actually heard a brewery founder tell me that they were going to do this. But they did, and then they had the audacity to be smug about it.

I would almost argue that the median level of stylistic knowledge of the craft consumer is going down as craft beer continues to trend up at its current rate. Please don’t complicate this further.

If you are brewing beer to make money, then stay out of the education side of the business. Then again, I don’t care how many “medals” or “awards” your beer has if its not worth drinking. You have no business teaching individuals about beer if you tell me that your beer is reheitsgebot in one sentence then two minutes later tell me about your adjuncts used in your brewing process.

It’s also cute to see breweries entering competitions with beers that will never be in the geographic area that the competition is held in. Why bother? Bragging rights? You know what I brag about? the fact my beer is actually in distribution and readily available in the different areas we distribute to.

This brings us to two Texas breweries that I refuse to support in any sort of way. Oddly enough, both are distributed by AbInBev houses what a fun coincidence. At least one will sell out in the coming years, the other will go under as no one cares to drink their beer.

Alright, I’ll step off my soapbox.

*I still like the double brown stout baltic porter, and stylistically this does not bother me as much due to complexity of the history of the style. But it is still wrong to mislabel your beer.
