Yes, that is emblazoned on the bottle. “Key West, Southernmost Wheat” By the Florida Beer company. A beer that is brewed with actual Key Limes. Now, I know that pies with Key Limes are amazing. I refuse to use anything but authentic Key Lime juice for my margaritas, and frankly… well I even squeeze Key Limes onto my salmon, and into ceviche. So a beer that includes this wonderful citrus is bound to catch my eye.
On the pour, this beer looks wonderful. A nice thick head, excellent lacing, and a phenomenal citrus smell. The beer itself is not clear, but almost orange juice appearing with all of the wheat strains. The flavor. Well, to put it kindly, I am not sure that I could ever settle for a Blue Moon now. Flavors of citrus, coriander, and the fresh hops make this an exquisite example of how a Belgian white should taste. You can also taste a hint of banana. The Key Limes that I was looking forward to are slight, but noticeable. I am only saddened by the fact that this is my last bottle.
The brewery itself has a very interesting history. The current owner, Humberto Perez, is akin to one of the founders of a large brewery in Venezuela in the 1920’s. The Florida brewery was bought by Perez who maintains a microbrew tradition, and uses only minimal amounts of automation in the brewing procress.
